NASA Johnson Space Center
NASA's Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center has been the epicenter of American human spaceflight since 1961. This is where Mission Control guided every Apollo moon mission, every Space Shuttle flight, and now manages operations for the International Space Station. It's where astronauts train, where spacecraft are designed, and where the future of space exploration takes shape.
Space Center Houston, the official visitor center, offers a world-class museum experience. The centerpiece is Independence Plaza, featuring a full-scale replica of the Space Shuttle Independence mounted atop the original NASA 905 shuttle carrier aircraft — you can walk through both. The adjacent Saturn V rocket display showcases one of only three remaining Saturn V rockets, the most powerful machine ever built.
The Level 9 tour takes visitors behind the scenes to active NASA facilities including the current Mission Control Center, astronaut training facilities, and the Space Vehicle Mockup Facility where full-size spacecraft replicas are used for training.
Interactive exhibits let you touch a real moon rock, try on a spacesuit glove, and experience a simulated shuttle launch. The center also features the astronaut gallery, an extensive collection of space artifacts, and rotating exhibitions on current missions.
Visitor Tips: Book the Level 9 tour in advance — it sells out weeks ahead. Plan at least 4-5 hours for the full experience. The tram tour to the Saturn V building is included with admission and is a must-do. Arrive when doors open to avoid afternoon crowds.
