Hermann Park & Miller Outdoor Theatre
Hermann Park has been Houston's beloved gathering place since 1914, offering 445 acres of gardens, lakes, trails, and cultural attractions in the heart of the Museum District. At its center, Miller Outdoor Theatre delivers one of Houston's greatest gifts — over 100 free performances each year spanning every genre imaginable.
Miller Outdoor Theatre's free programming runs from March through November, presenting Shakespeare, symphony, ballet, jazz, opera, Latin music, Bollywood dance, children's theater, and rock concerts. The covered stage faces a sloping hill where Houstonians spread blankets, picnic, and enjoy world-class performances under the stars. Covered seating closer to the stage is available free on a first-come basis.
The park's McGovern Centennial Gardens are a horticultural masterpiece, featuring eight distinct garden rooms including a serene Japanese Garden with a traditional tea house and koi pond, an arid garden showcasing drought-resistant plants, and a family garden designed for children.
McGovern Lake offers pedal boat rentals — a relaxing way to spend an afternoon with views of the park's lush landscape and the Museum District skyline beyond. The Hermann Park Railroad, a beloved miniature train since 1958, makes a scenic loop that delights visitors of all ages.
Visitor Tips: Check milleroutdoortheatre.com for the performance schedule. Arrive at least an hour early for popular shows. The Japanese Garden is most beautiful in spring. Combine a park visit with the Museum District — the MFAH, HMNS, and Children's Museum are all within walking distance. METRORail stops at Hermann Park/Rice.
