Hermann Park
Hermann Park is the green heart of Houston's Museum District and one of the most beloved public spaces in Texas. Since opening in 1914 with a gift of 285 acres from George Hermann, the park has grown to 445 acres of gardens, trails, lakes, and cultural attractions that draw 6 million visitors annually.
The park's crown jewel is Miller Outdoor Theatre, which presents over 100 free performances each year from March through November — Shakespeare, symphony, ballet, jazz, world music, and family shows under the stars. Bring a blanket and claim a spot on the hill, or reserve free covered seating.
The McGovern Centennial Gardens showcase eight distinct garden styles including a Japanese garden, an arid garden, and a family garden. The adjacent Japanese Garden, donated by the Japanese Garden Society of Houston, features a traditional tea house, koi pond, stone lanterns, and meticulously pruned plantings.
The Hermann Park Railroad, a miniature train, has delighted children since 1958 with a scenic loop around the park. Pedal boats on McGovern Lake offer another family-friendly activity. The Houston Zoo, located within the park, is a separately ticketed attraction housing over 6,000 animals.
Visitor Tips: Miller Outdoor Theatre performances are free — arrive early for the best hill spots. The Pioneer Log House (1847) is open for tours on weekends. The park connects to the Museum District via shaded pathways. Free parking is available but limited on weekends — consider the METRORail (Hermann Park/Rice station).
