Looking for something new to do in Houston this summer? Houston Greeters offers many ways to experience new places and fun activities in the Bayou City for an enjoyable and free “staycation.” Here are some of the most popular place and activities that Houstonians can schedule with a Houston Greeter:
- Explore The Woodlands Market Square, water taxis and other highlights
- Visit public gardens in Galveston with a master gardener
- Learn the secrets of the downtown tunnel system
- Try a yoga class
- Paddle a canoe along the bayou
- See a Hindu temple and learn about its beautiful architecture
There’s no doubt when Samantha Borland returns to Rice University this fall she will have made a positive impression on Houston Greeters. The enthusiastic summer intern wants to learn more about marketing and special event planning and she is putting that interest into action with Houston Greeters.
“I am so happy I got the position with Houston Greeters,” said Samantha. “I applied for the Shell Oil Company Internship Program because it is a good way to learn about new areas for me to consider as my future career options. I have met some interesting people and made several new connections.”
Samantha conducts campus tours at Rice University for prospective students and their parents during the school year. She is thinking about transferring that experience into becoming a Houston Greeter for Rice University after her internship. For now, she would like to experience some greets herself.
“I would love to do several greets like the Fly Over Houston, the Sweet Greet and the Downtown Tunnel Greet,” said Samantha. “I once got lost in the tunnels during a school trip so I would like to become more familiar with them.”
A sophomore at Rice, Samantha attended Awty International School of Houston and recently returned from a trip to France. She lives with her parents in Bellaire and enjoys shopping, movies and sailing in her free time. But that’s not all. She is spreading the word about Houston Greeters to her friends and family. “I want college students to know more about Houston Greeters!”
This internship program and other volunteer opportunities are coordinated through Volunteer Houston.
